Structural geological analyses in quarries provide valuable information for the long-term and safe planning of mining operations. In this context, basic geological and geotechnical knowledge is indispensable.

Our many years of experience in supervising large and small quarries in Austria have shown us that geology often takes a back seat during quarrying, and over time this can often lead to unexpected problems or unpleasant surprises in planning, quality assurance of the quarried material, or even jeopardize safety in the quarry. In the process, simple geological methods could be used to eliminate such inconveniences. Lost floors and thus lost raw materials as well as seemingly unpredictable quality fluctuations would then be a thing of the past.

Floors in the quarry

To enable quarry operators in the future to record, evaluate and integrate geological information from their own quarry with simple geological tools, we have designed the one-day course "Structural Geology in Quarries" for responsible persons in the quarry (plant managers, plant supervisors).

This course consists of a theoretical and practical part and teaches relevant topics from geology and geotechnics for quarries. Thereby basic information about the topics

  • Rock identification and difference rock - rock masses
  • Joint face (types, properties, threedimensional models, geological compass, evaluation)
  • Geogenic hazards in quarries and failure mechanisms

are explained.

The theoretical part is supplemented by practical application of the presented methods in the own quarry and data evaluation, so that the collected data can also be interpreted and integrated into the planning.

By holding the course in one's own quarry, there is the possibility to address individual problem areas in the quarry and to discuss solution approaches on site.

Interested parties can request the detailed course program at office@geo-unterweissacher.at.
